A Journey Through the Orange Field Tea Factory: A Reflection on Craftsmanship, Tradition, and St. Ignatian Spirituality

There has been a tradition that tertians visit a tea factory and this year too as a part of the programme we visited “Orange Field Tea Factory”.

On the 23rd of January 2024, I had the privilege of visiting the Orange Field Tea Factory, an experience that left an indelible mark on my heart and soul. Stepping into this sanctuary of craftsmanship and tradition, I was immediately struck by the reverence with which every aspect of tea-making is approached.

As I wandered through the corridors of the factory, I couldn't help but reflect on the principles of St. Ignatian spirituality, particularly the Principle and Foundation, which reminds us that God created all things on earth to help fulfill the purpose of praising, reverencing, and serving God, and ultimately, to save our souls. This principle calls us to use the things of this world only to the extent that they aid us in this purpose, and to rid ourselves of anything that obstructs it.

In the context of the Orange Field Tea Factory, this principle resonates deeply. Every leaf, every aroma, every sip of tea serves as a reminder of God's creation and our responsibility to steward it with care and reverence. The visionary behind this establishment, Mr. Sabastian, embodies these principles in his dedication to preserving tradition while embracing innovation.

Witnessing the meticulous process of tea-making, from field to cup, was a contemplative experience that deepened my appreciation for the complexities of this ancient art. It reminded me of the importance of being indifferent to the material trappings of the world, as St. Ignatius encourages, and focusing instead on what truly matters – the pursuit of God's will and the service of others.

What truly sets the Orange Field Tea Factory apart is not only the exceptional quality of its products but also the genuine warmth exuded by its dedicated team. This warmth reflects the values instilled by Mr. Sabastian, values rooted in love, service, and a deep reverence for the gift of tea.

Meeting Mr. Sabastian's family was a highlight of my visit, their passion and dedication evident in every word as they shared insights into their journey and the values that drive their extraordinary establishment. Their commitment to excellence and their unwavering faith serve as an inspiration to all who encounter them.

As I left the Orange Field Tea Factory, I carried with me a sense of gratitude for the experience and a renewed commitment to living out the principles of St. Ignatian spirituality. May we all strive to be stewards of God's creation, using the gifts entrusted to us to praise, reverence, and serve God, and to obtain love through contemplation and reflection. Thank you to Mr. Sabastian and the entire team for sharing your passion and craftsmanship with the world. God bless you abundantly.

  1. Thank you, Prabhu. Your well written article rightly points out some of the values that we learn at the tertianship namely care of our common home and concern for one another. As we enjoy the tea that we got from Mr Sebastian as a gift, let us remember to pray for him and his large parivar of the tea factory.
